George Njuguna, the Director of IT and CIO at Safaricom, has been named by Light Reading as one of the influential leaders, innovators and disrupters who are connecting the world in 2021.
Njuguna has been named in Light Reading’s The Broadband 50 to Watch, a listing compiled by a team comprising of veteran industry journalists including Connecting Africa’s Paula Gilbert and Nicole Ferraro, a Light Reading contributor and the host of The Divide podcast. Others who helped compile the list of 50 individuals are Omdia analysts – Julie Kunstler and Jaimie Lenderman – who helped put this list together and guided the Light Reading team to cover a wide array of broadband companies and countries, and Informa Tech’s Francesca Greane.

“To help navigate what’s happening in this part of the global communications marketplace, we’ve compiled the Broadband 50 to Watch, a list of influential leaders, innovators and disrupters who are connecting the world in 2021. We’re keeping an eye on these executives and think you should, too, as they’re moving this part of the industry forward,” states Light Reading’s editor-in-chief Phil Harvey.
Njuguna joined Safaricom in mid 2019 from Housing Finance (HF) where he’d held the position of Chief Operations Officer (COO) for almost 3 years with overall responsible for the mortgage lender’s Technology, Operations, and Customer Experience across the HF Group. Between September 2016 and December 2018, he was the CIO at HF, with the responsibility over Technology, Operations and Digital Transformation of the Group, a role which saw him being voted the overall ‘CIO of the Year‘ in the region in 2018 at the annual CIO 100 Awards, an event organised by CIO East Africa magazine, now CIO Africa.
Before his 4-year stint at HF Group, he worked at Commercial Bank of Africa (then CBA, now NCBA) as the Head of Information Technology. He has more than 19 years experience in IT, and 13 years experience in Banking and Financial Services, specifically in technology, operations, product development, project management, channel management, digital transformation and large-scale implementations.
“During his illustrious career, he has held various technical and senior management roles locally, regionally and internationally,” states his LinkedIn profile.
