SuperSport viewers on DStv can look forward to seeing all the action from the PGA Tour’s Bermuda Championship at Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton Parish, Bermuda from Thursday 28 to Sunday 31 October 2021.
SuperSport is the ultimate destination for Golf fans, with an unparalleled selection of action from around the world.
This will be the third edition of the Bermuda Championship, with Butterfield Bank now coming on as a sponsor and boosting the prize money to $6.5million, as well as the tournament being elevated to full FedEx Cup point status as of last year.
Brendon Todd and Brian Gay were the winners of the 2019 and 2020 editions respectively, with last year’s tournament decided by a playoff: Gay defeated Wyndham Clark for his first PGA Tour title since 2013.
“I’ve struggled the last few months and been quite miserable on the golf course at times. Everyone around me kept telling me, ‘You’re still going to win. My wife says, ‘You’re still going to win; do it again’,” said Gay after his triumph in 2020.
He added that the windy conditions, which are common to Bermuda, as well as the tricky grass type make it a more level playing field: “I love Bermuda greens. Living in Florida, the wind doesn’t bother me; I think it’s familiarity with the Bermudagrass. It’s not a long golf course. It’s a golf course where I get a lot of short clubs and you can’t really overpower a golf course. It keeps the shorter hitters in the game. Everybody has a chance here.”
Aside from the defending champion, another player to watch out for is Brian Morris, one of five Bermudians who will participate in the event. Morris, who was granted a sponsor’s exemption for entry and will be making his first professional appearance, has terminal stage 4 brain cancer.
“It feels absolutely fantastic to be able to walk the links and compete with some of the greatest players in the world,” said Morris. “I hope the Bermuda public are as excited as I am. I want them to have just as much fun as I do. I would like to thank the Butterfield Bermuda Championship team for this opportunity and the PGA Tour for allowing me the use of a cart because without it this is impossible.”
Tournament director Justin Belanger said, “The Butterfield Bermuda Championship is more than golf, it’s about this community. We are thrilled to welcome Brian to join us in the field for this year’s event and be a part of his professional debut. It will be great to see the island join us in supporting his dream and cheering him on.”
The Port Royal Golf Course is a 6,842 yard par 71 course. The purse for The Bermuda Championship is $6.5million.
