Serie A Feature: Lazio versus Napoli, on February 27, 2022

Lazio, Napoli set for heavyweight bout

SuperSport viewers on DStv and GOtv can look forward to a classic Serie A rivalry, as Lazio take on Napoli at the Stadio Olimpico on the evening of Sunday 27 February 2022.

DStv and GOtv is the only true home of football in Africa, offering a range and depth of action that no other rival can match – it’s literally ‘Unbeatable Football’! If you’re going to spend your money on something, it may as well be on the best football in the world.

The Neapolitans are still scrapping to keep themselves in the fight for the Scudetto, while Le Aquile’s ambitions are all about European qualification for next season.

“We know the challenge that awaits us, it will be a very difficult and very complicated match, because each team has their own ambitions,” explained Napoli boss Luciano Spalletti. “Still, we will travel with the hope that we can come back to Naples with the three points – this is always the goal.”

Lazio, meanwhile, have had a turbulent time in recent weeks after fan protests against President Claudio Lotito and director of sport Igli Tare, but Sergej Milinkovic-Savic says the players are focusing on their job.

“I think what happened was between the fans and the club. The supporters don’t have a problem with us, they are here supporting the players. It’s between the fans and the club,” said the Serbian.

Key players

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic – The Serbian is one of the driving forces behind Lazio’s attacking play and he will look to bring his full influence to this clash at the Stadio Olimpico, with Le Aquile targeting a statement win.

Victor Osimhen – The Nigerian is a reliable goal scorer when fully fit and he will hope to underline his growing status as a cult hero with Napoli fans by finding the net at least once against Lazio this coming weekend.

Head-to-head stats

In head-to-head stats, Lazio and Napoli have met in 49 matches across all competitions dating back as far as 1993. The Neapolitans have claimed 23 wins compared to 17 for Le Aquile, while nine games have been drawn.

When the teams met in Serie A earlier this season, at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in November 2021, Napoli claimed a 4-0 home win thanks to goals from Piotr Zielinski, Dries Mertens (two) and Fabian Ruiz.

Battles to watch

Maurizio Sarri v Luciano Spalletti – Two tempestuous coaches, but both are renowned for giving their team a defined identity. This tactical battle will be one for football purists to enjoy.

Manuel Lazzari v Lorenzo Insigne – The Lazio right-back loves to overlap and add his presence to the attack, but he will also have to track the unpredictable Insigne, who offers a major threat when cutting inside from the left flank.

Ciro Immobile v Kalidou Koulibaly – A classic striker v centre-back battle, Immobile will have to use all of his guile to evade the attention of Koulibaly, who is fresh from leading Senegal to Africa Cup of Nations glory earlier this month.
