Reno8 5G: From unboxing to first impressions of OPPO’s new flagship

We finally have the OPPO Reno8 5G on our hands, the latest model in the Reno series. Coming over a year after we last reviewed the Reno 6 5G in September last year, and six months since the Reno7 5G was unveiled in the Kenyan market, let’s first look at some of the basic features about this phone, without getting into much detail.

Like most, if not all, OPPO handsets, the Reno8 5G comes wrapped in the brand’s standard blue-and-black box. Within the box is the device (which in our specific case is the Shimmer Black variant, our review unit), 3-pin plug, Type-C charging (and data) cable, SIM eject tool, colourless protective case, quick user guide, and safety guide. And unlike with the Reno6 5G, the least model in the Reno series doesn’t come with earphones within the box.

Design, build and exterior

Even though lighter in weight when compared to the Reno6 5G (we’re using the Reno6 5G because we don’t have the Reno7 5G), the Reno8 5G comes in a relatively wider body side, though it’s slimmer when it’s viewed from the sides.

When held on the palm however, it still gives the user a firm grip, more so when covered (or clothed) within its colourless case. The rounded edges further contribute to enhance the grip when the device is held on the palm, ensuring that the hold is firm, meaning that the phone cannot easily slip off when held (or be easily grabbed from one’s hand when held firmly).

Performance and battery

In terms of functionality and performance, the OPPO Reno8 5G is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 1300 5G-integrated SoC processor. The advanced processor provides the user with smooth performance while playing games, loading apps, or streaming one’s favourite music videos or movies, thereby ensuring that the user has an incredible entertainment experience when they need to, day or night.

With its 4500mAh battery and 33W SUPERVOOC charging capability, the Reno8 5G assures the user of an unrivalled reliable experience and peace-of-mind. The 80W SUPERVOOC Flash Charge feature and OPPO’s exclusive Battery HealthEngine further extends the battery’s longevity when charged duration, ensuring you have the mobile experience for much longer and in the quickest time yet.

And with the Super-Conductive Vapor Chamber (VC) Liquide Cooling System, the user doesn’t have a reason to worry about their Reno8 5G getting heated to the extent of being unable to hold on the palm as the feature helps to significantly boost heat dissipation, ensuring that the device remains as cool as possible while in use.

Camera and photography

The Reno series is renowned for its focus on exceptional photography features and videography capabilities. And being the latest flagship in the series, the Reno8 5G does not disappoint as it comes powered by Dual Sony Flagship Sensors as well as a number of AI-enhanced imaging capabilities such as Ultra Night Video and Night Portrait.

RAM and storage

We had already started before that the OPPO Reno8 4G is designed to ensure that you have a highly fluid and effortless day-to-day user experience with its 4500mAh battery and 33W SUPERVOOC capability. But this is not all. With 8GB of RAM (which can be virtually expanded by a further 3GB depending on the need), you can multitask and run a number of apps at once, without worrying about the phone abruptly freezing and stopping to function while you’re in the middle of an activity. Added to this, the 256GB of storage capacity means that you can never actually run out of storage space while using the phone, whether for saving your crucial work documents and files, or huge video and audio files for your entertainment while unwinding after your professional activities.
