OPPO pushes design and functionality boundaries with the Find N2 Flip

Like any major smartphone vendor keen to play among equals in the global arena, OPPO has joined the ongoing foldable devices trend, unveiling the OPPO Find N2 Flip. The brand’s model in the foldable (and Flip) range was launched in the Kenyan market at the end of May.

Comparatively late to the party, joining the foldable devices bandwagon after other brands had already tested the waters (and market) with their models, OPPO however hand the advantage of being able to pick lessons and tips on what worked (and was popular with the market in terms of features and functionalities), and what didn’t impress users in the already launched foldable and flip devices. Coming in late, for brand OPPO, is therefore not entirely a band thing.

That’s why when the OPPO Find N2 Flip hit the market, users were curious (and of course excited) to know what it had come with which was lacking in the already announced Flip smartphones.

So what does it offer?

Design and Feel

The OPPO Find N2 Flip comes in two colour variants – Astral Black and Moonlit Purple. My review unit is the Astral Black version. The phone’s back cover has a rubbery, and almost grainy feel, leading to a better grip even when the device is being used without the case. With the case however, the device feels more sturdy and compact when held on the palm, giving the user a firmer grip and hold on the device. The colourless plastic case even guards the device against accidental scratches that may arise during use.

Due to the slim build of the phone and its smooth edges, I’d prefer always having the phone inside its protective case when in use, whether one is indoors or outdoors, to guard against instances where it can accidentally slip from the user’s palm onto the ground, possibly crushing the screen.

With its slim design and small frame, the phone is not only portable and easy to hold on the palm but also comfortably fits into both the side and back trouser pockets, all without protruding. The resulting little bulge which appears when the device is kept in the trouser pocket doesn’t appear conspicuous, meaning that the user can use and keep the device discreetly without raising undue attention to themselves.

The device has no headphone jack slot, meaning that users can only listen to audio files via Bluetooth from wireless earphones.

Display

OPPO Find N2 Flip weighs 191g and measures 7.45mm when the main screen is open. It has 3.26-inch cover screen, the industry’s largest cover screen for flip phones. The huge screen size enables to easily handle the device while checking notifications or replying to messages. For added convenience, the screen can display up to six notifications at once, thereby boosting the user’s productivity.

The cover screen has a vertical orientation. This design feature enables the user to message notification, adjust make calls, and even send messages without unlocking the phone’s full screen.

The phone comes with polished aluminum edges, a fingerprint-resistant glass cover and a micro-etched wave pattern across the hinge. The phone’s main screen is 6.8-inch E6 AMOLED display with a cinematic 21:9 aspect ratio, with a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. This display gives the user an impeccable viewing experience as well as superb visibility in diverse environments.

Performance and Durability

When it comes to performance and durability, one of the main concerns for potential users of the OPPO Find N2 Flip will be the hinge holding together and supporting the two sides. The two parts of the device which form the cover and main screen displays are held together by a water drop-shaped hinge, constructed from aviation-grade steel which makes it really strong though slim in size. The hinge ensures seamless folding and an immersive screen for an even more exceptional viewing experience when unfolded. The hinge’s miniaturized design has led to a more compact device, while leaving even greater space for a larger cover screen. Additionally, the hinge design also leads to a robust, folding screen with a very subtle crease.

The OPPO Find N2 Flip, the dual SIM 5G-enabled device, is powered by MediaTek Dimensity 9000+ processor, has 8GB of RAM (plus 4GB of virtual memory), with 256GB of internal storage capacity. It runs on Android 13 operating system supported by OPPO’s own ColorOS 13 skin, thereby giving the user more customization options as relates to the arrangement of widgets, home screen apps, wallpapers, screen notifications, as well as the Always-On-Display (AOD) which can be setup to provide useful info at a glance on the screen.

Camera and photography

The OPPO Find N2 Flip comes fitted with a 50MP main camera with a Sony IMX890 sensor, a feature which is ideal for memorable photography. With the phone’s large cover screen, one can effortlessly focus on objects and then capture their desired photos. And with the Dual Preview feature, you’re able to see and confirm how a person (or the objects) in the photo or video will appear.

Aided by its hinge design and technology, the device has the FlexForm Mode with which the user can hold the phone in a mid-fold position at either 45-degree or 110-degree angles, enabling them to capture images and record videos according to their creative preference.

And that’s not all. Remember the phone can still be transformed into a steady, hands-free camera for group photos and even video calls on the various mobile and social media apps. The phone’s 32MP selfie camera, coupled with its Sony IMX709 sensor, also enable autofocus as well as wide-angle capture of shots.

To ensure even better shots, OPPO partnered with the renowned camera brand Hasselblad while designing the Find N2 Flip all in effort to enable users to capture pro-grade colours through the camera’s fully featured Professional Mode as well as its XPAN mode which freezes time in a wide, cinematic frame.

Battery and charging capability

Supporting the device to ensure that it runs smoothly and efficiently during every day use is a 4,300mAh battery. This is impressive considering the small size of the OPPO Find N2 Flip. However, bearing in mind the functionalities, features and apps, which the phone runs and powers during everyday use, the 4,300mAh battery is just ideal.

Over and above its internal tests which showed that the phone can be used extensively for a full day on a single charge, OPPO has also fitted the Find N2 Flip with the fastest charging technology – 44W SUPERVOOC. Through this charging feature, the battery can charge from nearly empty and achieve 50% capacity in just 23 minutes and attain a full charge in less than an hour.

The long and impressive battery life of the device boosts convenience for the user when they’re out conducting their everyday activities (and businesses) while also giving them peace of mind as one is never worried about their phone running out of charge.

Conclusion

Having had the opportunity to use and sample the features and unique functionalities packed into the Find N2 Flip, I’m convinced that OPPO was out to push (and pushed) boundaries in the industry when it comes to the Foldable (and Flip) segment with this model.

Retailing at Kshs 129,000, with the colour options being Astral Black and Moonlit Purple, the Find N2 Flip is a comparatively less expensive option when you look at the other models in this range. This is despite the fact that it comes with similar (if not more and even unique) features and capabilities.

For those keen on an upgrade, you’re welcome to go and try it out at the OPPO Customer Centre located at Emperor Plaza, Koinange Street in Nairobi. And for the first time on OPPO products, the phone is available for Trade-In (on OPPO or any other smartphone model) or via flexible payments (or via installments) option. All you’ve to do as potential buyer is to visit the OPPO Customer Centre and select the option which works best for you and your budget.
