MultiChoice’s streaming platform Showmax has announced that its Showmax Pro package is set to be phased out in 2023 as the service prepares for a relaunch.
Showmax Pro was introduced in July 2020 and bundled existing Showmax entertainment content together with music channels, news, and live sport streaming from SuperSport.
However, with the platform’s upcoming relaunch, the service’s sport offering will focus exclusively on the English Premier League, deemed as the most popular football league in Africa.
As part of the planned changes, Showmax Pro – in its current form – will be phased out by November 30, 2023. As a lead up to the transition, as from October 1, 2023, Showmax Pro will no longer be available for subscription. Customers who have set their accounts on an auto-renewal subscription will not be charged past October 30, 2023, and can continue to access the content until the last day of their existing subscription.
According to a statement from the company, existing Showmax Pro subscribers in select markets will be able to stream even more live sport from SuperSport, a wide variety of live channels and more with an exclusive DStv Stream and Showmax bundle deal.
“With Showmax relaunching, we’re shaking things up. Part of the change is phasing out Showmax Pro in its current format. But we want to make sure that our Showmax Pro customers are still able to access the sport they love. As part of this product change, existing Showmax Pro customers in South Africa will be offered a DStv Compact Plus Stream package at the same price as Showmax Pro. This gives customers access to even more live sport from SuperSport including the Premier League, LaLiga, Serie A, UEFA Champions League, and additional sport like the NBA, NFL and UFC, as well as selected Rugby World Cup 2023 games via the DStv Stream app. Customers will be able to stream over 115 live channels, access the full catalogue of DStv video-on-demand library and continue to have full access to Showmax’s entertainment catalogue,” stated Showmax in an update to customers.
“In countries in the rest of sub-Saharan Africa, existing Showmax Pro subscribers will be offered a DStv Stream package at the same price as Showmax Pro, which will also give access to even more live sport from SuperSport including the Premier League, LaLiga, Serie A and additional sport like the NBA, NFL and UFC via the DStv Stream app. This includes live-streaming of a variety of live channels, access the full catalogue of DStv video-on-demand library, as well as full access to Showmax’s entertainment catalogue.”
DStv Stream packages are currently available in 10 African markets, namely: South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, Botswana, Namibia, Ghana, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
As regards the new pricing structure and what subscribers will be offered, Showmax clarified that there are variations on what’s available in each country, based on the content line-up, local conditions, and currency fluctuation. As an indicator, the Showmax Pro package in South Africa comes bundled with Champions League football though this isn’t included in other regions due to licensing agreements. The DStv Compact Plus available to subscribers in South Africa is on par with what Showmax Pro customers had access to in this region, and includes events such as the Champions League.
