Tech skills key to fighting climate change – experts

Technology and technical skills are vital in combating the pressing issue of climate change by mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and building a more sustainable future, experts have said.

Head of UNESCO-UNEVOC’s International Center for Technical and Vocational Education and Training, Friedrich Huebler said to solve climate change, the world needs green skills and digital skills in the workforce.

“We have to find solutions to the global climate crisis. Many of the solutions will make use of technology. Therefore, it’s necessary for us to have a workforce that has the green skills and digital literacy to find solutions that will make our economies and societies greener. It’s not just about reducing emissions; it’s about leveraging innovation to transform our energy systems, transportation networks, and industries,” Huebler said.

Huebler spoke at the Huawei Green Development Summit at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona 2024.

Soledad Patiño, the Coordinator of the UNESCO Skills Academy, believes harnessing tech resources will require the right partnerships with private sector players, noting that private sector players such as Huawei Technologies hold the key for the world’s ability to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

“They can bring the expertise that they have, but also the understanding and the knowledge of this fast-evolving change in labor markets. This is fundamental for helping people make the transition from school to work,” Ms. Patiño said.

The experts further noted that breakthroughs in energy storage, smart grid systems, and carbon capture and storage (CCS) were paving the way for a more sustainable energy future.

Hosted by Huawei, on the sideline of the MWC Barcelona 2024 held in Spain, Huawei Green Development Summit 2024 centered on how the company and its industry partners use green information and communications technologies to support low-carbon urban development, nature reserves, bridge the digital divide, and more.
