Optimism your Feed: LG’s practical tips on how to curate a more uplifting and inspiring social media feed

We all face situations every day. Some may be pleasant, others sad, while in some cases, some situations and circumstances we have to face and deal with are downright distressing. But in all this situations, and no matter how bad and unpleasant, how we react and respond afterwards is always up to us.

Remember that saying about what happens to you is beyond you, but how you react is within your control, and is upon you to decide.

In other words, we are always stressed upon to look up and stay optimistic, no matter the situation. Even though everything may be breaking up around you, it is always important to strive and stay positive, all in the hope that things will soon improve and get better.

And in this era of social media, the kind of messages and content we interact with online eventually contribute a great deal in determining our moods, temperament, and thoughts.

That’s why in order to encourage and ensure that we engage with uplifting and positive content on social, and help us maintain our healthy psychological, LG this year launched “Life’s Good – Optimism Your Feed,” campaign. ‘Optimism Your Feed’ campaign is aimed to spread positivity on social media by encouraging engagement with inspiring content. The initiative focuses on sharing uplifting stories and messages to create a more positive online community.

Before the launch of the ‘Optimism Your Feed’ campaign, LG commissioned a global survey commissioned which found that social media is both a source of anxiety and a place where people turn to be entertained, keep up with friends and family, and stay informed about news and current events. In the survey, almost half of respondents (45 percent) reported that their social media feeds consist of an equal or greater amount of negative content than positive content. Additionally, 1-in-4 respondents (28 percent) stated that negative content on their social media feeds has increased their anxiety and 1-in-5 (20 percent) said it has made them unhappy. Other studies also suggest that algorithms often promote negative and niche conversations.

The survey also sought to understand the triggers that affect how algorithms work and how to increase your feed’s positive content.

The findings from the survey culminated in the design and launch of the ‘Optimism your Feed’, a playlist of original content that, when interacted with, pulls and channels more optimistic and positive content into your feed.

But how can you sanitise your social media feed – whether YouTube or TikTok – to ensure you don’t leave your fate to algorithms but take control and ensure that you only interact with and engage with positive content which build your optimism?

Below are practical tips from LG on how to curate a more uplifting and inspiring social media feed:

Identify the content:

On LG’s YouTube channel (@LGGlobal), you can get more acquainted with the campaign. By interacting with the videos on LG’s feed, one gains more insights about the campaign, the fact that the algorithms on our social media feeds have become more unpredictable. To address this and ensure that you only get the content which you desire, LG’s ‘Optmism Your Feed’ is a playlist that retrains your algorithm, as you watch it, to serve you content that you actually like to watch (and not what the algorithm recommends for you).
