The OPPO Reno12 series – which comprises Reno12 5G and the Reno12 F 5G – has been in the market for over a month now. And during this time, we have had an opportunity to use on of the models in series, Reno 12 F 5G, trying out its various embedded features and functionalities to gauge how far the brand has managed to push boundaries this time.
But for some background, let’s go back a few steps. It’s worth noting that the unveiling of the OPPO Reno12 series came after the global launch of OPPO’s strategy to democratize AI for all mobile phone consumers across the brand’s device range.
With the Reno12 series, OPPO was out to introduce a range of latest GenAI features that enable users to unlock their creativity and productivity.
“This is an exciting time for the OPPO brand as we launch the Reno12 series in the Kenyan market. This launch marks a pivotal moment for OPPO as we continue to push new boundaries with regards to technology. We have partnered for GenAI industry leaders to enable us to democratise AI. Our vison is to empower mobile phone users of across OPPO’s value chain to experience the power of AI and the Reno12 series is one significant step towards this vison,” said Fredrique Achieng’, the PR manager, OPPO Kenya.
Design
The Reno12 F 5G is available in two colour variants, and we have the Amber Orange version. With shiny, round and smooth edges, which reflect light when the device is tilted, the Reno12 F 5G has an almost premium feel and build when held on the user’s palm.
Apart from the shiny ‘OPPO’ logo embossed symmetrically towards the bottom, the back of the phone has the four-camera system, arranged in what the brand calls ‘cosmos ring design’ formation.
Adding to the beauty and functionality of the Cosmos Ring Design is the Halo Light feature. The Halo Light seamlessly syncs with the beat and intensity of the phone’s music and vibrations for a harmonized experience and feel when listening to their favourite tracks. Through Halo Light, special light effects have also been customized to give the user a unique ambience while charging, and for notifications, calls, and or while gaming.
And for a firmer grip, the device is shipped with a colourless and ribbed case which ensures that when held, the phone cannot slip off from one’s hand due to its smooth and almost slippery edges.
Camera and Photography
Up until this point, Reno models have come with ‘Portrait Expert’ as the tagline, a tribute to the models’ focus on advanced camera features and capabilities. However, with the infusion of AI-powered features and capabilities in the Reno 12 series, we now have ‘AI Portrait Expert’ as the slogan, indicating new creative possibilities for the user.
To deliver the best in terms photography and videography, the Reno12 F 5G comes fitted with a 50MP Main Camera for ultra-clear portraits with crisp quality. When the camera is in Pro Portrait Mode, the main camera and the 2MP macro camera combine their capabilities to give the user the best in terms of natural bokeh effects.
The 50MP main camera is complimented by the 112-degree 8mp ultra-wide-angle camera which is suited for situations when the user has to capture beautiful scenes and landscapes.
Finally for selfie fans, there’s the 32MP selfie camera, designed with two focal length options (0.8x, 1x) for the perfect selfie. And with the AI Portrait Retouching feature, one is then customize the image with the various natural retouching effects.

Let’s now highlight how the AI features infused by OPPO in the Reno12 F 5G can help you to creatively enhance your photos:
AI Studio:
The AI Studio, which comes as a stand-alone app on the device, is what you need to convert your photos into digital avatars using the various profiles and themes available in the studio.
- To use the AI Studio to transform your photo, you click on and open the app from your screen.
- The next step is to choose your template, either ‘Single’ or ‘Group’, then click on it
- From there, you’ll then be shown the various styles available for you to choose from to transform your image.
- Once you’ve picked your style to work with, you now have the option of picking the photo to convert using the AI Studio. Here, you can pick an image and add it from your gallery, or take a new one using your phone and then upload.
- From here, you can then follow the prompts as we’ve explained in this video.
- Once the digitally transformed version of your photo is generated from the studio, it’s saved to your device for later use. You can then share it to your colleagues and close cycle via social media, file transfer or email.
AI Eraser:
Many are the times when we hurriedly take photos but later on realize that we captured other objects (and even people) within the same photo by mistake. And because we are unable to recreate the same scene, as we’ve already moved away from that location while the people we’re with have also left and dispersed, we are left disappointed.
However, now with the AI Eraser feature in the OPPO Reno12 F 5G, we can finally breathe a sigh of relief.
- Unlike the AI Studio, which comes as an app, the AI Eraser tool is a feature which can be accessed by clicking on an image on the phone’s gallery.
- Then choose the ‘Edit’ option. You’ll then be presented with various options to edit the photo, including Crop, Adjust, Filter, AI Eraser, Markup, and Watermark, among others.
- Once here, you select the ‘AI Eraser’ option.
- To use the tool, you have three options to pick from according to your preference – Smart Lasso; Paint over; and Remove people. Then once here, you can proceed and achieve your desired image as explained in this video.
