An iconic Premier League rivalry will be revived on Sunday 3 November 2024 when Manchester United welcome Chelsea to Old Trafford.
Match background
While both of these heavyweight clubs have fallen on ‘hard times’ in recent seasons (relative to the success they have formerly enjoyed), their meetings still have the feel of a ‘main event’ fight and provide incredible entertainment.
A perfect case in point was the last Premier League match between these teams, held at Stamford Bridge back in April of this year. Chelsea established a 2-0 lead inside 20 minutes, but United surged back to claim a 3-2 ascendancy by the midway point of the second half.
However, Cole Palmer netted two goals (to complete a hat-trick) deep into injury time to see the Blues win a crazy game 4-3. If we get anything like that again this weekend, it will be unmissable entertainment!
What the teams are saying
Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes on his team’s struggles this season: “We know the results have not been what the fans want, or what we [players] want, but we still need their support. Things can only improve if we all work together to take Manchester United back to where it should be.”
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca on the progress made by his team this season: “The target is to improve and slowly, slowly to get closer to those clubs [title challengers like Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool], but at the moment we are not ready for that. There is no time frame because you can continue to improve and add solutions to things always.”
Players to watch
Andre Onana, Manchester United
In a season where many United stars have failed to live up to their potential, goalkeeper Andre Onana has stood out with his consistency and leadership. The Red Devils may need him to be in peak form for this clash with Chelsea.
Cole Palmer, Chelsea
After his hat-trick against United last season and the outstanding form he has shown in this campaign, Chelsea will certainly look to Cole Palmer for inspiration as they seek a famous win at Old Trafford.
Head-to-head
In head-to-head stats, United and Chelsea have met in 195 matches across all competitions, dating back as far as 1905. The Red Devils have claimed 83 wins compared to 56 for the Blues, while 56 games have been drawn.
The teams’ most recent meeting was the 4-3 thriller detailed above which broke a seven-game unbeaten run for Man United in the rivalry.
