Binance, the global blockchain ecosystem behind the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume and registered users, successfully hosted a special International Women’s Day (IWD) event on March 8, 2025, in Nairobi, Kenya. The forum was aimed at promoting financial empowerment and increasing female participation in the blockchain and crypto industry.

The event, attended by 300 women from the local community, was a transformative afternoon centered around crypto education, financial independence, and women’s leadership in the Web3 space. Participants engaged in a variety of educational workshops, panel discussions, and networking opportunities, with a particular focus on encouraging women to take a proactive role in shaping the future of digital assets.

The event was designed to empower women worldwide by connecting them with industry leaders and offering learning opportunities in the Web3 industry.

The Nairobi gathering was one of several held across ten global locations between March 5 and March 15, highlighting the importance of inclusivity and diversity in the rapidly growing blockchain and crypto sectors. These locations are Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam), Dubai (UAE), Milan (Italy), Madrid (Spain), Cape Town (South Africa), Buenos Aires (Argentina), São Paulo (Brazil), Mexico City (Mexico), Lomé (Togo), and Astana (Kazakhstan).

“Binance remains a leader in driving gender diversity across crypto and tech. Women now represent 40% of our workforce and half of our marketing team,” said Rachel Conlan, Binance’s Chief Marketing Officer. “While progress has been made, there is still work to be done to usher more women into crypto. Through our International Women’s Day events, we aim to celebrate and inspire women, fostering financial empowerment and breaking down barriers to industry knowledge and participation.”

Panelists discussed the critical role women are playing in the blockchain space, as well as the barriers they’ve overcome to get to where they are today. They emphasized the growing need for diverse voices in the tech industry and the positive impact women have on innovation and the future of blockchain technology.

The challenges women face in the male-dominated crypto and blockchain sectors were openly discussed, with panelists sharing personal stories and strategies for overcoming obstacles. The conversation highlighted the importance of resilience, networking, and supporting each other to create a more inclusive and welcoming environment in the tech world.

“Whatever knowledge you have, use it to climb a higher mountain. If you’re an accountant or developer, use that to find opportunities in the Web3 space. If you’re in law, learn how you can use your expertise to protect people in the crypto world. Be committed in this industry, show up and you’ll be at par with men,” said panelist Mercy Njane.

As the crypto space continues to grow, so do concerns about fraud and scams. Expert speakers provided valuable insights on how women can protect themselves from crypto fraud, with practical tips on how to safely navigate the digital finance space. The session also covered the importance of education in combating fraud and ensuring the security of investments in the ever-evolving crypto landscape.

One of the most powerful messages of the event was a call to action for women to take control of the Web3 industry in Africa. Speakers urged participants to embrace blockchain technology, take ownership of their financial futures, and lead the charge for Web3 adoption in the region.

“Have the audacity of a man. Grab the bull by its horns. We do a lot of work but we rarely talk about what we do. So no one notices. Let the world know about your work on social media, it could be the financial opportunity you have been waiting for,” said panel moderator Melissa Kanyi.

Women were encouraged to step up as leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs in the Web3 space, with the ultimate goal of positioning Africa as a key player in the global digital economy.

The event concluded with a renewed sense of empowerment and determination among the participants, with many expressing their eagerness to continue learning and engaging in the blockchain and crypto industries. Binance’s commitment to supporting women in tech and fostering diversity within the digital asset space remains stronger than ever.
