Startimes Kenya to air Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) documentary till January 26

Few weeks after the first batch of locomotives arrived in Kenya from China, Startimes Kenya is this week airing a documentary film on Standard Railway Gauge (SGR) as a partnership with the Kenya Railways Corporation.

The documentary has been airs from Tuesday January 24th till Thursday January 26th on Startimes Swahili channel 160 on the DTT platform and channel 400 on DTH.

The SGR is a multi-billion shilling project involving the development of a modern high speed/high capacity railway for passengers and freight within the northern corridor.

The first batch of six freight locomotives were handed to Kenya a few weeks ago for line testing process.

Once the SGR is operational, the locomotives are expected to help ease pressure on the Mombasa – Nairobi highway by providing an alternative – and main avenue – for transporting heavy goods to inland Kenya.

A total of 56 locomotives, all manufactured by CRRC Corporation of China, are eventually expected to operate on the Mombasa-Nairobi SGR route with the entire fleet scheduled to be in the country by mid-year. The fleet will consist of 3 models: passenger, freight and shunting locomotives.

According to the manufacturer, the locomotives are ideal for the country having been customized for the tropical savannah climate, operational environment and future maintenance requirements.

Being constructed by CRBC, the Nairobi-Mombasa SGR line, running from Mombasa Port to Nairobi.
