Kisumu’s LakeHub – a technology innovation hub which provides open working spaces for entrepreneurs, technologists, investors and makers – has launched an online fundraising with a target of US $ 5,000.
The campaign, launched yesterday – January 27 – via crowdfunding platform gofundme, has already realized US $ 390 in pledges from 9 people with the donations ranging from US $20 to US$100.
“In the past day, we’ve already raised nearly US $400 due to the generosity of some of the best people I know. Keep sharing this campaign with your friends and family. Here are a couple of pics so you can see the people you are helping,” states one donor on LakeHub’s campaign page.
LakeHub hosts young programmers, coders, designers, and creatives who have come together to improve Kisumu and Western Kenya by teaching fellow Kenyans marketable technological skills. The members create new apps, new web pages, and new applications that address social needs such as safety, health, and education. They also equip children, youth and adults with computer literacy skills.
Funds raised from the gofundme campaign will also be used to help the organization meet its short-term operating costs of rent (they have been issued with an eviction notice from the current premises), utilities and internet connectivity. The targeted US $5000 is sufficient to cover LakeHub’s operations for about 3 – 4 months.
